A & A Research at UHN


Established in 1998, the Arthritis & Autoimmunity Research Centre, at University Health Network is Canada's most comprehensive arthritis research facility combining clinical and applied studies with basic science research. It attracts some of the highest-calibre scientists and trainees from around the world.

HUN is a Leader in Research:
UHN invests over $160 million into research annually and is one of the largest academic health sciences centre in Canada. The AARC Foundation provides critical infrastructure funding for arthritis research. For every dollar received from generous donors, an additional four dollars can be leveraged by scientists from other granting agencies.

UHN's arthritis patient base is both large and diverse.
This patient base creates a significant research platform for the range of scientists who have played a leading role in the discovery of every major arthritis-related therapy in Canada.
Scientists include:
  • Clinical doctors working with patients on drug trials to bring new, more effective drug therapies to market; such as the recent emergence of biologics.

  • Basic scientists working in state-of-the-art laboratories such as the new Toronto Medical Discovery Tower.

  • Population health researchers exploring the real impact of arthritis on individuals in order to advance the development of progressive health policies and effective interventions

  • Orthopaedic surgeons researching surgical wait times and testing joint replacement materials.
