UHN's Rheumatology Division is the largest in Canada and is internationally renowned for excellence in clinical care, clinical investigation, and basic research. The faculty of 12 rheumatologists provides multidisciplinary care to patients with complex and sometimes life-threatening rheumatic diseases. Located at Toronto Western Hospital, it is home to the only rheumatology inpatient clinic in Canada.
The Orthopaedic Surgery Division is a province wide resource for patients with complex musculoskeletal disorders. The areas of expertise are joint replacement, sports medicine and fracture management. Past patients have included Toronto's professional sports teams and the National Ballet of Canada. Last year, the Orthopaedic Surgery and Fracture Clinic had 25,794 outpatient visits from across the province, with the surgeons performing 671 joint replacement procedures. The Hand Program is a multidisciplinary team of 4 surgeons working with a designated team of physiotherapists and occupational therapists to treat patients with complex hand and upper extremity problems, often caused by rheumatoid arthritis. In addition, the program is the upper extremity replant centre for the province of Ontario, and is the only site for the University of Toronto Hand Surgery Training program attracting postgraduate trainees from across North America. In 2004, the Hand and Plastic Surgery Clinics had 13,836 clinic visits, and performed 1,377 hand surgeries. ![]()
