Accountability to Our Patients
Infection Control and You: Tracking Infection Rates in the hospital
At the University Health Network (UHN), we are continuing in our commitment to provide the best and safest level of health care to our patients. As one of the first hospitals in Canada to publicly post our rates for common hospital-acquired infections - Clostridium Difficile (C. difficile), Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), and Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci (VRE) - we believe transparency and accountability are both key in order to earn our patients valued trust.
You can now compare the C. difficile, MRSA and VRE rates for UHN’s three hospital sites: Princess Margaret Hospital, Toronto General Hospital and Toronto Western Hospital.
Ministry of Health and Long Term Care Infection Control Rates
C. difficile
Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) bacteremia
Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci (VRE) bacteremia
You may also compare UHN’s monthly C.difficile and quarterly MRSA and VRE rates against other Ontario hospitals by visiting the Ministry of Health’s website at www.health.ontario.ca
Rates reported to the ministry for MRSA and VRE include bacteremia’s (infections in the blood) only.
UHN Balanced Scorecard Infection Control Rates
The hospital Balanced Score Card (BSC) also contains C.difficile, MRSA and VRE rates as indicators in the Caring domain. MRSA and VRE rates on the BSC include colonizations and other forms of infections with these organisms beyond bacteremia cases. Therefore the numbers on the BSC are higher than the ones reported provincially. You will also notice that the C.difficile rates are different on the BSC, because they are reported quarterly and for UHN as a whole, not monthly and site-specific as on the Ministry of Health’s web site.
